SUEZ presents its reference practices in the circular economy and in public-private partnerships at the Smart City Expo World Congress

14 November 2017

A new edition of the Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC) began today at the Gran Via exhibition site of Fira de Barcelona. From 14 to 16 November, it will host the global benchmark event on smart cities. SUEZ is playing a leading role at this congress, with several presentations, and a corporate stand is offering the group’s solutions to confront the challenges of big cities.

The 3rd International Conference on PPPs in Cities, promoted by IESE business school, also took place within the framework of the congress. On this occasion, it focused on how to attain the Sustainable Development Goals in the big cities of Latin America. Jonás de Miguel, Strategy Development Director of SUEZ, shared the projects carried out by the company in this territory, with examples in Chile, Colombia, Panama and Brazil, with different models of public-private partnership, adapted to the needs of each territory.

On the SUEZ stand Marta Calvet, Project Manager of SUEZ, presented the case study of Sant Feliu de Llobregat, where a very innovative project has been implemented to apply the principles of the circular economy on a local scale, with a shared waste and infrastructure management system.

For her part Inés Labarta, Innovation Partner of SUEZ, explained the projects undertaken by SUEZ to improve watering in cities, using platforms which integrate sensors and meteorological data to optimize the use of water resources in this sphere.

Subsequently, Bruno Hervet, Executive Vice-President Smart & Resourceful Cities of SUEZ, participated in the round table “Circularity in the City: Opportunities and Challenges”, in which he set out the main initiatives to make the circular economy a reality in big cities, as the only alternative to preserve natural resources.

The Smart City Expo World Congress was officially opened during the afternoon of this first day, and the authorities present toured the exhibition hall. The SUEZ stand was visited by Álvaro Nadal, Minister of Energy, Tourism and the Digital Agenda; Enric Millo, government representative in Catalonia, and Núria Marín, Mayor of Hospitalet de Llobregat. This year’s event is expected to break records and bring together over 17,000 visitors from cities all around the world.
