The water expert Peter Gleick analyzes how to tackle drought with sustainable solutions

15 November 2016

In the framework of the Iwater fair, held in Barcelona from 15 to 17 November, Peter Gleick, a researcher, economist, expert in the water sector, member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and co-founder of the Pacific Institute of Oakland (California), yesterday offered the talk entitled “Adapting to drought: sustainable solutions for water challenges”. In this talk, he analyzed the management of water resources in contexts of scarcity, focusing on the case of California. He likewise advocated a new approach to the management of water resources called the “soft path for water”, linked to concepts such as the smart economy and new sources of supply.

The conference, organized by the Water School in the context of the AQUAstage programme, took place in the CREA space of Ciutat de l’Aigua. It included the participation of the Director of the Water School, Eduard Pallejà, who welcomed the attendees and stressed that “the main objective of the conference, as a prelude to the Iwater fair, was to create a space for the exchange of knowledge, in particular to tackle situations of drought and discuss how to confront them from different perspectives”.

For his part, Agbar’s Director of Business Innovation, Fernando Rayón, and Aigües de Barcelona’s Director of Planning, Enric Castellví, analyzed the management of drought in Barcelona, concentrating on the period 2007-2008, one of the most serious droughts experienced in Catalonia from the records of the last 60 years.

On closing the event, Aigües de Barcelona’s Director, Ignacio Escudero, highlighted the fact that “crisis management is one of the aspects generating the most interest among water service officials, managers and operators worldwide. This is all the more so in a scenario of global warming with the possible consequences of climate change”. He likewise encouraged the attendees to continue to share knowledge at the Iwater fair.
