SUEZ ratifies its commitment in the fight against climate change at COP22
09 November 2016
As a participant in the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP22) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Morocco (held from 7 to 18 November), SUEZ has extended its commitment to the fight against climate change, which it already established at COP21 at the end of November/beginning of December in 2015, in Paris.
Over the coming days in Morocco the Group will present its initiatives and take part in debates that will carry on where the dialogue in Paris left off. On this occasion, special emphasis will be put on the need to provide global and local solutions in the field of water, as well raise awareness among citizens about the urgency of preserving water resources, particularly in Africa.
Oceans, cities and habitats, in addition to the price of carbon, will be some of the topics dealt with by SUEZ in the events held as part of COP22. Specifically, this Wednesday, 9 November, SUEZ is organising a special seminar focussing on the field of water, which will include meetings with entrepreneurs and specialists.
COP22, led by the UN, once again brings together the 197 signatories (196 countries + the EU) with the intention of stopping global warming. This year, COP will be focused on applying the decisions adopted during the last Conference (Paris Agreement), where a key role was given to measures to keep the temperature of the plant from increasing by more than two degrees in 2100.
ACTIVITIES WITH A POSITIVE IMPACT
The SUEZ Group’s activities have a positive net impact on greenhouse gas emissions. The Group seeks to set a fair price for carbon to reduce pollutant practices, implement truly responsible models in terms of climate and make the switch from a linear to a circular economy. SUEZ Group operations worldwide generated 8.2 Mt CO2e in 2015 and allowed customers to avoid 9.2 Mt CO2e through the manufacture of recycled products, green energy and alternative fuels. As a part of its 12 climate commitments, the Group has set an objective to include the price of carbon in its decisions regarding investments of R&D capital.
