Aqualogy develops a preventive maintenance programme for valves in Ocean City (USA)

Aqualogy, through Utility Service Group (USG), has developed and implemented a preventive maintenance programme for valves in Ocean City, Maryland (USA). In this city the conditions of sandy soil, the floods that it suffered due to hurricane Sandy in autumn 2012 and the large population influx in the summer (around 300,000 people) impose great demands on the city’s water supply infrastructure.
The objective was to guarantee an efficient water supply in this American city using state-of-the-art computer-controlled equipment, which was designed specifically for valve testing, and also using high-precision GPS location technologies, geographic information systems (GIS) and the contribution of technical staff specialized in valve maintenance and restoration.
With this preventive programme, over 1,400 valves have been assessed, recording them in a GIS database and increasing their operating efficiency by up to 94% after the work carried out. A total of 7 blocked and inoperative valves were also detected, being restored without the need for the city to have to invest in replacing them. A further 12 valves which were thought to be open were actually closed, a circumstance which could have affected the water quality and the flow necessary for fire-fighting. These valves are now operational again after completing the work.
