SUEZ Water Spain holds the Thematic Cycle Water, Food and Energy
25 May 2016
Maria Pi, Director of the CREA space, was responsible for opening the meeting. She raised two challenges which have been detected with the attendees: Aqua balance and Smart agriculture. On the one hand, Aqua balance refers to the “development of systems to offset the water footprint with a long-term sustainable vision”. On the other hand, Smart agriculture refers to the “increase in agricultural productivity with the application of new technologies linked to the pillars water, energy and fertilizer use”.
Three experts participated in the conference: William Sarni, Director and Practice Leader: Water Strategy, Social Impact Practice in Deloitte; Lucie Pia Pluschke, Water-Energy-Food Nexus Officer at the FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization) and Diego Rodríguez, Senior Economist with the World Bank.
The three speakers agreed about the opportunities presented by the challenges of the water, food and energy nexus. In the water and food nexus, they focus on increasing the annual supplies of water for irrigation, water productivity in irrigated areas and the value per unit of water in better management of soil moisture and applying complementary irrigation.
Furthermore, the opportunities of the water and energy nexus would focus on a reduction of the losses from water pipelines, an improvement in energy efficiency and an increase in awareness-raising to obtain a change of consumption habits in both domestic and industrial users.
Manuel Cermerón, SUEZ Water Europe’s Director of Strategy and Development, was in charge of closing the Thematic Cycle Water, Food and Energy, declaring that “SUEZ has been committed to this trinomial for a long time. The company supports the circular economy and environments such as the city, industry and agriculture”.
