Various stages have passed in the history of industry and of the strategies used to control pollution, going from the dilution of the pollutants present in industrial effluent for their emission into the environment, to the present date, when we face the need to know and control these pollutants to prevent their release in industrial emissions (in any of their forms).

The chemical industry is experiencing a growing interest in improving water management, whether as a cost-saving tool, for environmental improvement (environmental management system, corporate image, etc.), or to reduce the dependency on the local supplier, as in areas with water scarcity they perceive a risk of shortages which would affect production.
